Opencast Mining

Standard Post with Image

Morupule Coal Mine harnesses its vast coal resources to meet the local demand for coal and positions itself to be able to meet the regional appetite for the energy resource. At the Heart of our business operation is the understanding of the role our coal plays in securing energy for Botswana and the economic potential the resource has in supporting the country’s diversification efforts.

MCM produces coal products for different customers, including power station grade coal, various crushed coal products and washed coal. There is a high demand for high-value sized coal products into the regional industrial market particularly continued Asian demand and as evidenced by the growth in export coal sales from the South African Richards Bay Coal Terminal.

Motheo Project

The Motheo Project was fundamentally set-up to position Morupule Coal Mine as a strategic source of energy producing coal using opencast mining. The open cast will increase the tonnage produced by MCM allowing for high scalability to meet demand. The project is scheduled to start the commissioning phase by December 2021 and the Project will deliver:

  • An Opencast mine

  • Integrated Coal Handling and Processing Plant (CHPP)

  • Supporting infrastructure
