Morupule Coal Mine (MCM) champions sustainable game farming and wildlife conservation

As part of the ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship and biodiversity preservation, Morupule Coal Mine (MCM) continues to lead by example through its conservation-driven game farming programme. In a recent milestone, MCM, through a strategic partnership with the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (DWNP), donated 10 zebras and 20 elands to support the Government of Botswana’s “Keeping Game in Masimo” initiative.

This donation is more than a gesture, it is a reflection of MCM’s structured conservation programme, which includes species management, population control, and ongoing wildlife headcounts to ensure ecological balance within its conservancy. Through sustainable game farming practices, the mine not only safeguards biodiversity within its concession but also extends support to rural communities by donating surplus game to registered conservation areas and community projects.

The Keeping Game in Masimo initiative aligns with MCM’s values of sustainability, stakeholder focus, and community empowerment. By encouraging game farming in rural settings, this programme enhances food security, promotes eco-tourism, and supports alternative livelihoods rooted in Botswana’s rich natural heritage.

“We believe that true sustainability means finding harmony between development and conservation,” said MCM’s Head of Safety and Sustainability, Patricia Nkuna. “This initiative reflects our long-term vision of creating a thriving, green future for Botswana, where both communities and ecosystems flourish.”

As MCM continues its environmental conservation journey, the company remains committed to contributing meaningfully to Botswana’s National Vision 2036 by promoting responsible resource management and inclusive rural development.

Together with our partners, we are not just conserving wildlife, we are empowering communities and securing a legacy of environmental responsibility for generations to come.
